How buying works

Buying firearms online is straightforward once you know the steps. Here's what to expect when you order from FWD.

The buying process

  1. Find your item. Browse or search the catalog. Each listing shows its stock status: In stock, Ships from distributor, or Out of stock.
  2. Check out online. Add items to your cart and check out. If your order includes a firearm, you'll choose a licensed dealer (FFL) near you during checkout.
  3. We ship your order. Firearms go to your chosen FFL. Ammunition and gear ship to your address where the law allows.
  4. Pick up your firearm. Your FFL contacts you when it arrives. You fill out ATF Form 4473, pass the background check, and take it home.

FFL transfers explained

An FFL is a Federal Firearms Licensee: a business licensed by the ATF to deal in firearms. Federal law requires firearms sold online to be shipped to an FFL rather than to the buyer's home.

How it works

  • Choose a dealer. Pick a local gun shop or other FFL near you at checkout. It's a good idea to call them first to confirm they accept transfers and ask about their fee.
  • Paperwork goes to them. The dealer's license information is needed before a firearm can ship.
  • Background check at pickup. When your firearm arrives, you visit the dealer with a valid government-issued photo ID, complete ATF Form 4473, and the dealer runs the background check (through NICS or your state's system).
  • Transfer fees. Most dealers charge a transfer fee, paid directly to them. State waiting periods or additional requirements may also apply.

Your dealer may decline a transfer that doesn't comply with your state or local law. Check your local requirements before ordering.

Shipping

Firearms

Ship only to a licensed FFL dealer you select at checkout.

Ammunition

Ships to your door where legal. Some states and cities restrict ammo shipments.

Gear & optics

Ships to your door. Some items, like certain magazines, can't ship to every state.

Most orders ship directly from a distributor's warehouse. Shipping costs and options are shown at checkout.

Age requirements

Federal minimums for purchases from a licensed dealer:

ItemFederal minimum age
Handguns21+
Handgun ammunition21+
Rifles and shotguns (long guns)18+
Long-gun ammunition18+

State and local laws may be stricter. You may be asked to verify your age before an order ships.

State and local restrictions

Some products can't be shipped to every state, county or city. Examples include certain firearms, magazines above a set capacity, some ammunition, and other regulated items. Restricted items can't be shipped to locations where they aren't allowed.

You're responsible for knowing and following the laws where you live. If you aren't sure whether an item is legal for you to own, check with your local FFL or law enforcement agency before ordering.
